Tip
Read the problem several times and jot down the important facts
Tip
Word problems usually point to a reference point which will become the primary variable. Ex: Mike has 4 more than three times the number of tardies that Frank has.
The reference point is Franks tardies. The number of tardies that Frank has becomes your X
Tip
Often you start assembling the word problem from the middle. For example three times the number of tardies that Frank has is where you begin. This will be 3X. Then work outward and add on the 4 more.
