Integrated Math Word Problems

Here’s a great example of a word problem that requires finding a slope, writing an equation , and projecting an outcome:

In 2010 there were 281,700 web designers. In 2020 there were 318,500. In what year will the number of designers exceed 300,000.

Slope formula: y2 –y1 /   x2 –x1

First we have to find 2 points to make a slope:

2020 X2                    318500  Y2

-2010 X1                     -281700  Y1

10                                36800

Slope =  36800/10    Now use this slope with either of the two points. We’ll use (2010, 281,700)

Slope =   3680

Y=mx + b

281700=3680(2010) + b

281700=7396800 + b

b= -7115100

Now substitute in 300,000 for Y and solve for the year X that it will occur.

300,000 = 3680x – 7115100

X= 2014.97. Therefore the # of designers will exceed 300,000 before the end of 2014
